Kalinga villagers denounce killing of two students
THE brutal "summary executions" of two college students from Kalinga has angered village mates, who described the killings to be "barbaric" and without respect for human life.
Franklin Gac-oy, a dentistry student of Pines City College in Baguio and village mate Martin Bulakit, were found headless and handless in Marcos Highway and Rosario, La Union, respectively late last week.
Gac-oy's remains was placed in a black plastic bag and discovered by a street sweeper along Taloy Sur in Tuba while pedestrians found the body of Bulakit near the Rosario highway.
Their bodies were brought to the La Paz Funeral Homes along Naguilian Road on Friday. It was learned that the victims belong to the Lubo tribe in Tanudan, Kalinga.
While some sources claimed the two were victims of a tribal conflict between villagers of Barangays Basao in Tinglayan and Lubo in Tanudan, some tribal leaders are saying otherwise.
They claimed the manner of killing the two was not a practice among conflicting tribesmen.
Even Supt. James Dogao, director of the Kalinga Provincial Police Office, said in a telephone interview that the killing is not tribal-conflict related.
Dogao, however, confirmed there is an ongoing tribal conflict between villagers of Basao and Lubo. He also agreed that the manner of killing was not a practice in Kalinga.
Police investigators are still conducting follow-up investigations to determine the real motives of the brutal slaying.
The "summary executions" of the two college students were the latest addition to the increasing number of suspected salvage victims dumped in remote areas near the highways in Benguet province and nearby La Union province.
The killings were also described to be more barbaric than the salvaging cases in Davao, where the victims were only gunned down by suspected vigilante groups.
