Consumer Month centers on food and drugs for all

THIS year's celebration of Consumer Month on October shall center on the theme, "Food and Drugs for All".

Likewise, the National Consumer Affairs Council identified the Department of Health as the lead agency for the said celebration by Consumernet members.

Consumernet is composed of national government line agencies and private entities that aim to work together to bring the services, programs and projects to most, if not all, of the intended beneficiaries.

The celebration of Consumer Month shall be activities emphasizing the message that government and private agencies ought to deliver quality services to their consumers. The Department of Trade & Industry is the permanent secretariat of the Consumernet group.

In the Cordilleras, the Consumernet chairmanship shall be turned over soonest from the 2003 lead agency, which was the Department of Environment & Natural Resources regional office headed by Regional Executive Director Isaias Barongan to the DOH-CAR headed by Regional Director Teresita Bonoan.

Bonoan disclosed that there are initial activities lined up for the Consumer Welfare Month celebration but that these shall have to be finalized and approved yet.

Consumernet members last year with offices within Baguio City included the DENR-CAR, the DOH-CAR, the DILG-CAR, the DOF's Bureau of Local Government and Finance, the Philippine Information Agency, the Philippine Postal Corporation, the Department of Agriculture, the Housing & Land Use Regulatory Board, the National Food Authority, the National Telecommunications Commission, the National Transmission Commission, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, React-CAR, the National Meat Inspection Commission, the Social Security System, the Bureau of Plant Industry, and the Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources.

Members with office addresses located in La Trinidad include the Department of Education, the Department of Science & Technology, and the Police Regional Office in the Cordillera.

This group worked together and campaigned for awareness of a better environment for safety consumers last year.

Meanwhile, the Consumernet program of the national government was reported tp be working on the initiative and resourcefulness of its members, as there was no fund allocated for its program. Consumernet, in its 5th year, was said to be operating for the improvement of consumer service. Connie P. Nibaten
