THE first Baguio Mayor's Cup, a defensive pistol match which will form part of the series of activities to commemorate the 95th Charter Day Anniversary celebration of the city, will be held at the West Point outdoor shooting range along Marcos Highway on August 28 and 29 this year.
However, the awarding of trophies and medals to winners will be held at the Baguio Convention Center on September 1.
This was bared over the weekend by WEPPSA president Henry Ramos, who disclosed that the four-stage competition which is being co-sponsored by the Baguio City government will be open to civilians, uniformed and non-uniformed members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as well as WEPPSA members.
"It is with pride, joy and honor that our club was given the privilege to host and conduct the 1st Baguio City Mayor's Cup in honor of Mayor Braulio Yaranon and this will be one of the sporting highlights and events leading to the Baguio Day celebration on September 1," Ramos said.
"The International Defense Pistol Association type of shooting competition was ideally chosen for this event because of its adaptability to real-life situations, actual scenarios and defense shooting responses which any licensed gun owner may encounter or experience in his or her lifetime," he explained.
He said that this was also the main reason why WEPPSA members, although being part of a practical shooting club, have decided to include, adopt and be proficient in this type of shooting sport.
"As club president and in behalf of WEPPSA's officers and members, we would like to express our gratitude and thanks for the support and participation of Mayor Yaranon, his staff and other government officials and personnel, as well as shooting enthusiasts from the PNP, AFP and other clubs for showing their interest in participating in this upcoming competition. It is my belief that this endeavor will increase interest, proficiency and greatly promote safe shooting sports in this part of the country," he added.
For interested participants, a registration fee of P600 will be assessed from civilian shooters, P500 from PNP and AFP officers and personnel, and P400 from WEPPSA members. This would include free t-shirts to the contest and snacks.
Prospective entrants may avail of more information about the match by visiting the West Point Guns & Sports office located at the 2nd floor of the Puso ng Baguio building along Session Road or call telephone number (074)443-5744.Ernie N. Olson Jr.
