Bakun official reports on labor status of residents
BAKUN Vice Mayor Belino Suni-en said the two mini-hydro companies operating in the municipality limit the employment of residents with regard maintenance.
This developed as Suni-en said only 30 percent of the individuals employed at the height of constructions remain for the maintenance of the operations.
The same, however, does not only apply to the operations of the Hydro Electric Development Corporation group of companies but to all other construction works done within the locality.
"At the height of (any) construction, several individuals are being hired but only 30 percent remains to maintain operations," the vice mayor explained.
And although there is an existing agreement that people from Bakun should be given priority in employment, Suni-en disclosed that some individuals employed to maintain the operations of the companies are not actually residents of the locality.
He was, however, quick to explain that such happens because there are some functions that could not be performed by the locals.
"Companies resort to hiring individuals who are not from the municipality because there are tasks that the locals could not perform."
The vice mayor reported earlier the existence of mini-hydro developers in Bakun has been beneficial to the constituents.
He said all the barangays of the municipality, except for some sitios, have already been energized with the aid of Hedcor and Luzon Hydro.
"They are the ones who promised for the energization of other barangays that were not reached by electricity before."
Suni-en also said the municipality has been realizing reasonable amounts derived from the operations of said corporations, with the receipt of around P300,000 per month which represents two percent of Hedcor's gross sales.
"They serve as assets to the municipality." (Jane Cadalig)
