Auto group says drag racing is legal
THE Baguio Auto Group has denied allegations that drag racing is an illegal form of racing according to proposed resolution of Councilor Rufino Panagan.
In a letter to Vice Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr., the Baguio Auto Group explained that drag racing is the safest form of auto racing, which only involves individual drivers and their cars in a straight drag strip of a distance of quarter mile or approximately 400 meters.
"We may then clarify that the incident cited by Councilor Panagan in Loakan Airport was totally not 'drag racing', which involves several people inside the car as this was a mere 'joy ride' by a group of teenagers," the group added.
They said that as a group of drag racers in the city, "we would like to correct the wrong notion and impression of the word 'drag racing' to the common people of Baguio."
The group added drag racing is a legal form of auto racing, which is sanctioned by Prospeed and PDRF, both drag racing organizers, who impose rules and regulations and safety at the drag strip in association with the Philippine Motor Association.
Drag racing competitions and events, where the Baguio Auto Group have participated in, were held in Clark Air Base in Angeles City, north harbor and Macapagal Boulevard in Manila, in Cavite and lately in Cebu City during the 1st Mayors Cup Invitational Drag Event as a part of the Sinugbo Festival.
The Baguio Auto Group also appealed to the city government to allow at least one or two drag racing event in the city to educate drivers and the people of Baguio on what drag racing is all about.
Meanwhile, Councilor Jose Molintas, chairman of the committees on human rights, justice, public protection and safety, peace and order, pointed out in his report that Batas Pambansa 33, particularly Section 2 (e), provides that speed contests and rallies involving motor vehicles, otherwise known as drag racing, is punishable by a fine ranging from P2,000 to P10,000 or imprisonment of at least two months to one year or both.
