City's funeral parlors complying with standards
By Rimaliza Opiña

THE Sanitation Division of the city's health department, through engineer Sofronio Repalda, clarified the common public notion that funeral parlors employ unhygienic practices in embalming cadavers.

Repalda explained that as far as the two operating funeral parlors in Baguio are concerned, both have complied with the requirements of Presidential Decree (PD) 856 or the Sanitation Code of the Philippines.

Under PD 856, funeral parlor owners, aside from securing the necessary facilities needed for them to operate, must also engage the services of morticians duly licensed by the Department of Health (DOH).

Repalda said sanitation inspectors are mandated to conduct regular inspection to ensure that funeral parlors are complying with the requirements of the DOH.

He added that sanitation inspectors, upon inspection orders from the DOH, are allowed to conduct surprise inspections.

Repalda warned that those found violating the Sanitation Code would have their permits revoke and would face appropriate charges in court.

Those found guilty of violating PD856 shall be imprisoned for six months or be fined P1,000, depending on the court's discretion.
