Datuin opposes removal of overpass roofing
COUNCILOR Elmer Datuin has expressed deep reservations over the reported plan of Mayor Braulio Yaranon to remove the roofing of the pedestrian overpasses that have been serving the residents since 1995.
Datuin said Yaranon might have been ill advised once more in asking the City Council that the roofing of the overpass facilities be removed before urgent repairs will be undertaken.
"I find it unthinkable that public servants like us would deprive our constituents with an overpass roof that has sheltered them from the elements and enabled them to utilize the facility with utmost ease, convenience and comfort. Definitely, I will oppose any moves to remove the roofing," he stressed.
Datuin added, "we are punishing our constituents for the inability of the police authorities to clear the facility from illegal vendors who crowd these overpasses which allegedly is the reason for the proposed move to remove the roofing of the overpasses."
The overpass repair project has already been bid out in accordance with the established procedures and to amend the project design, on account of the roofing removal, is to injure the right of the winning bidder to proceed with the project, he said.
The alderman appealed to Mayor Yaranon to reconsider his request, "lest our people's anger and disgust be cast at the City Hall for government's insensitivity to the constituents."
Yaranon's endorsement for the removal of the pedestrian overpass roofing is pending before the committee on public works chaired by Councilor Antonio Tabora Jr. (Patrick Rillorta)
