Melchor favors plan to extract water from Benguet
BENGUET Gov. Borromeo Melchor expressed no opposition on the proposal of some private companies to extract water from some of the municipalities of the province.
This developed even as he admitted that around 80 percent of the barangays of Benguet have no water and about 20 percent do not have sources of water.
Melchor on Wednesday reported that some municipalities, especially those that are affected by the mining operations, have no water, including some parts of Kapangan, Kibungan, Itogon and Tuba.
When asked on his stand on the proposal of the Benguet Corporation (BC) to extract water from the municipality of Itogon to be supplied in the city of Baguio, the governor said "I have no objection on their proposal, provided, the water that will be extracted will also be supplied in Itogon."
BC is tapping the Antamok River in Itogon to be its source of raw water that will be supplied to Baguio.
"I have talked with (BC president Philip) Romualdez and I have no objection (on their proposal) provided they supply Itogon. We also have to support the people of Baguio because it is, in return, supporting us," Melchor, former head of the National Irrigation Administration, stressed.
He added one of his priority programs is the (establishment) of water systems in every municipality.
"We have coordinated with the members of the Provincial Board for the allocation of P100,000 to each barangay for water system and for the reforestation of watershed areas," he said, adding that a big chunk of the province's proposed 2005 budget would be for water-related projects and programs.
