Abra politicians surrender firearms
By Ernie N. Olson Jr.

CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet -- Abra politicians surrendered some 29 assorted firearms to the Police Regional Office (PRO) Monday.

Politicians in Abra promised to yield more guns being used by their private armies not later than October 8.

Seven assorted firearms, a grenade launcher and 54 confiscated motor vehicles were also turned over to the newly created Task Force Abra (TFA) from September 25 up to October 4.

Chief Supt. Rowland Albano, PRO-Cordillera director and concurrent TFA commander, said the turned-over ammos include two Elisco M-16 rifles, a Thompson sub-machine gun, one 12 gauge shotgun, one M-16 FN rifle, a 9mm Patriot machine pistol, a cal. 45 pistol and a 9mm pistol by Gov. Vicente Valera; one Elisco M-16 rifle and two cal. 30 Springfield M-1 Garand rifles by Lagayan Mayor Cecilia Luna; one Elisco M-16 rifle, a cal. 30 Springfield M-1 Garand rifle and a cal. 38 revolver by La Paz Mayor Ysrael Bernos; and two 12 gauge shotguns by Peñarrubia Mayor Antonio Domes-ag.

A cal. 30 Springfield M-1 Garand rifle by Bucloc Mayor Mailed Molina; a similar rifle by Pilar Mayor Rolando Somera; one cal. 30 M-1 Carbine by San Isidro Mayor Elizalde Pacsa; one Maverick 12 gauge shotgun by Pidigan Mayor Arnulfo Bisares; an Armscor 12 gauge shotgun by Lagangilang Mayor Lizardo Sinogo Jr.; a Thompson sub-machine gun by Bucay Mayor Rodolfo Bernardez; two homemade 12 gauge buckshot shotguns, one homemade 'wan-pung' cal. 45 pistol and two homemade cal. 38 revolvers by Tayum Mayor Rogelio Elveña; and one Thompson sub-machine gun and one cal. 30 Springfield M-1 Garand rifle by San Jyan Mayor Medel Taverner.

Albano said the turnover was held inside the Abra Provincial Police Office at Camp Juan Villamor at around 11:30 AM Tuesday.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Edgardo Aglipay, during his visit to Abra last month, ordered local politicians to disband their private armies and surrender the firearms in two weeks time.

The directive formed part of the gun ban he imposed province-wide to curb, if not totally stop, heinous crimes perpetrated in the "Killing Field of the North."

Albano said he conducted an inspection and a dialogue with local executives of the province.

An awarding ceremony followed at 8 a.m., wherein 13 Medalya ng Kasanayan and 49 Medalya ng Papuri were conferred to 11 deserving commissioned officers and 51 non-commissioned officers of the Abra Provincial Police Office and TFA.

The activity was followed by the closing ceremony of the PNP Refresher Course Class 01-2004 hurdled by 61 of the 64 original personnel who started the refresher course.
