Elderly fashion show in SM set
THE Regional Inter-Agency Committee on Older Persons (Riacop), in coordination with the Federation of Senior Citizen's Association of the Philippines-Cordilleras, will hold an elderly fashion show Saturday at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the SM Atrium.
A group of senior citizens from the six provinces, including Baguio City, will model the different cultural and traditional attires in the region like those worn during wedding, burial, baptism and the like.
Aimed at bridging the generation gap between the young and old, the fashion show will serve as a venue where the youth would appreciate the cultural diversity in terms of clothing worn by their ancestors.
The activity will also serve as the venue for the awarding of winners of the search for 2004 Huwarang Lolo and Lola in the region, who were adjudged according to their physical and mental fitness as well as their contributions to the community.
Three age categories (male/female) were provided for the search. The (60-69) category was won by Isabelo Bayungan, 64, and Perla Nagayaan, 65, both from Mayoyao, Ifugao. In the 70-79 age category, Sylvia Estolas, 70, of Tuba, Benguet and Mariano Tadeo, 79, of Tayum, Abra defeated their counterparts from Ifugao, Mt. Province and Benguet. Ramon Hangdaan, 85, of Banaue, Ifugao, who is the oldest in the search and Geronima Elvena, 82, of Tayum, Abra emerged as the winners in the 80 and above category.
The participants underwent rigid physical and mental examinations that include laboratory exam, mental fitness, past medical history, personal history, oral health, social attributes, membership standing and community participation.
Examination of the participants was conducted in cooperation with the members of the Baguio City Dental Association, Philippine Medical Women's Association, the Department of Health, National Nutrition Council (NNC)-Cordilleras and other government and non-government organizations (NGOs).
Dr. Micaela Defiesta of NNC-Cordilleras, chair of the search, said partnership with the different NGOs and with professional groups is a potential avenue to help the government implements social programs and projects like this.
"Joining hands together would bring successful programs that reach out to the grassroots," she stressed.
