Bangsoy: Pornography and child abuse By Annabelle Bangsoy
IT DOESN'T take a great mind to search and conclude that pornography is one evil factor why child sexual abuse happens. A children's song that goes, "oh be careful little eyes what you see" holds more truth than all the rationalizations and denials of adults on the valid connection of pornography and child sexual abuse and other kinds of sexual perversions.
In the United States, pornography is now a $10-billion industry, corrupting the minds of many. Internet porn has invaded homes that are supposed to be the secure enclaves of children. "The testimonies of women indicate that sexual abuse has existed for years and will continue to accelerate as long as corrupt minds have easy access to pornography," Tim and Beverly La Haye in their book Raising Sexually Pure Children said.
One of the marks of a molester, which they have listed down in their book, is a sexually obsessed male who reads pornographic literature or views sexually explicit movies. "Pornography is to the mind and emotions of men what gasoline is to fire," the La Hayes observed. "It has become the single most inflammatory force for evil in our society," they added.
In our communities, youngsters and the old alike sing to the tunes played out by sing-along joints anywhere with pornographic videos. It seems that most advertisers and those who package their ads have to resort to every wrong value to sell their products, foremost of which is pornography. Television and print media at present do not employ strong filters against pornography. Children are mercilessly exposed to this evil. It is then no wonder why child abusers that figured in recorded child sexual abuse cases in the city include children themselves!
I felt vicarious victory as a mom when a mall banned pornographic films in their theatres. I thought it was a good fight between giants - the capitalist mall owner and the wealthy film producers. It was one moral stand I deeply appreciated. As a parent, raising sexually pure children who will stand up for what is right in a perverted society is its own reward. It is a legacy that doesn't need power or wealth to get it done.
