Animal foundation, cops rescue 62 dogs By Jane Cadalig
PERSONNEL of the Animal Kingdom Foundation and the La Union Police intercepted a van loaded with around 62 dogs bound for a slaughterhouse in La Trinidad early Wednesday morning.
Apprehending officers identified those arrested as Efren Anglo, 42, married, and a resident of San Antonio San Pedro, Laguna; Enrico Almeida, 34, married; and Edgar Santos Moravilla, 49, both residents of Cuyab San Pedro, Laguna.
The team, headed by Supt. Rolando Bersola and AKF officer Brando Gegway, stopped the white Kia van with plate number XRS 114 at 2:15A a.m. The vehicle was loaded with dogs supposedly to be delivered to the Comiles slaughterhouse along KM 6, La Trinidad.
AKF reports said the owner of the dogs was identified by one of the suspects as a certain Robert Medina who told them to deliver the animals to LT.
The AKF also reported the operation was conducted after supporters of the Foundation in Laguna told AKF Vet. Winston Samaniego that a Kia van was spotted in one of the holding areas of dog traders in Laguna, loading the canines Tuesday afternoon.
After the tip-off, the team manned a checkpoint in Saitan, Rosario, while Samaniego stationed himself in Paniqui, Tarlac to see to it that the suspects would not change their route towards Dagupan City.
The rescued dogs were brought to the San Fernando City pound under the supervision of City Veterinarian Flosie Decena and are now up for adoption.
"However, it is believed that half of the dogs will be immediately put under proper disposal due to serious skin diseases," the AKF stressed.
The suspects, on the other hand, were detained at Rosario, La Union awaiting the decision of Municipal Trial Court (MTC) Judge Caroline Pangan with regard their offense.
Pangan, on the other hand, encouraged the AKF team to do more apprehensions against dog traders passing the area to stop the brutal treatment of dogs.
"This operation strengthens the AKF efforts to stop dog trading especially since December is always branded as the peak season of dogs for Christmas noche buena," the AKF said in a statement.
