Compromise on boundary tiff between Benguet, I. Sur eyed

OFFICIALS of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) are set to meet with Benguet officials to tackle issues relative to the resolution of the boundary dispute between the province and Ilocos Sur.

This developed as DENR Regional Executive Director Isaias Barongan informed members of the Provincial Board that the department and concerned local government units decided to proceed with the boundary identification, monumenting and survey.

Barongan, in a letter addressed to Governor Borromeo Melchor, requested that a consultation with concerned provincial officials be conducted for the purpose of discussing the implementation of the said activity. The letter was endorsed to the Benguet Provincial Board (PB) Tuesday.

Sugpon, Ilocos Sur Mayor Fernando Quiton Sr., also in a letter to Barongan, said the counterpart fund of the province for the conduct of survey and monumenting has already been released to DENR Region I.

The money, worth P173,100, was agreed upon during the dialogues held between the province and the affected municipalities, which include the towns of Bakun and Kibungan in Benguet and Sugpon, Ilocos Sur.

Quiton further requested Barongan to "take the appropriate action for the disbursement of the counterpart fund of Benguet in the implementation of the survey and documentation of the said boundaries."

It was also agreed that the undertaking would be a joint activity to be conducted by the DENR Region I and CAR. (Jane Cadalig)
