Baguio gears up for Holy Week

AMIDST speculations that Baguio is another possible target of terrorist attacks, Senior Insp. Clemente Gines, chief of the Baguio City Police Office Community Relations Office (BCPO-CRO), said the City is ready to maintain peace and order during the Holy Week.

Clemente said, "We, together with the volunteers, are exerting our ability and vigilance to maintain peace and order."

He added that the communication groups organized by the city are all set to assist tourists who are expected to flock the Summer Capital this week.

The 30 communication groups are composed of a minimum of 30 members each. "Some even have more than 100 members which include boy scouts and other civilian volunteers," Clemente said.

Meanwhile, managers of bus stations expect an increase in the number of tourists during the Holy Week and also tightened their security in the wake of a series of attacks especially in Metro Manila and other key cities in the country.

"Dadami ang mga turista ngayon kasi nakita na nila na safe na ang Baguio noong Panagbenga (The number of tourists will increase because they have already proven that Baguio is safe during the Panagbenga)," Rogelio Ortega, terminal master of Victory Liner, said referring to the effect of the meningoccocemia scare that hit the local tourism industry.

Ortega said: "Nagdagdag kami ng buses at gumawa kami ng schedule para ma-accommodate ang mga pasahero (We have additional buses and we made a schedule to accommodate our passengers)."

He said Victory Liner would increase the number of buses during the "peak season."

"May 71 trips kami in one day, every 20 minutes ang interval ng biyahe (We have 71 trips departing in a 20-minute interval)," Ortega added, saying they would even dispatch buses every 10 minutes if the need arises.

Ortega also said they have hired eight additional security guards for the safety of passengers.

On the other hand, Philippine Rabbit's Branch Manager Rogelio Balaoing said: "We hired additional security guards who consistently check the security of the passengers." (Ian Ree Raquel/Kristofferson Badua, interns)
