City's number coding lifted anew

BAGUIO City Mayor Braulio Yaranon has ordered the suspension of the city's number-coding traffic alleviation scheme from March 21 to 25 in observance of the Holy Week.

However, he said this will only cover private vehicles and not public utility vehicles like taxicabs and jeepneys.

In issuing Administrative Order (AO) 037-05, Yaranon said private vehicles will be exempted from the number-coding scheme because "Baguio is expecting an influx of visitors and tourists during the Lenten season."

He said the number-coding break will allow residents and tourists to enjoy the various activities being prepared for the summer as a tribute to visitors who spend the Holy Week here.

The activities, put under the traditional 'Summer Vacation' or SumVac program, kick off this week.

Earlier, Yaranon also issued AO 034-05 to accommodate the influx of visitors during the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) graduation. The suspension was from March 10 and 11.

This was aside from the suspension of the same scheme from April 18 to 24 to give way for the celebration of the recently declared Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Week here.

In issuing AO 035-05 on March 10, Yaranon said IBP Northern Luzon and Baguio-Benguet will host the 10th national convention of lawyers for the first time in the city from April 19 to 23. "As a support of the City Government, the (City Council) passed Resolution 062-05, declaring the period from April 18 to 24 as IBP Week in the city of Baguio. The City Council likewise requested for the suspension of the implementation of the number-coding scheme during the said period considering that delegates nationwide are expected to attend the said convention together with their families and friends."

The City Council may also declare the period from March 29 up to April 3 this year as Rotary Week in Baguio to show appreciation for the club's "genuine support concerning social, moral and environmental issues that contribute to the upliftment and betterment of our city." (ENO)
