Beneco to hike power rate in June
THE Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) is set to increase power rates that would probably take effect June this year.
But Beneco General Manager Gerardo Verzosa said the management hass yet to decide on how much increase would be collected from consumers. "Beneco will be increasing the rates but we still have to compute if how much additional charge would be implemented."
The impending power hike is a result of the P5.56 per kilowatt-hour increase recently approved by the Energy Regulation Commission (ERC).
As a result of this increase, distribution utilities sourcing power from the National Power Corporation (Napocor) are also expected to raise their electric rates to pass the charge on to consumers in order to recover the power generation cost.
Verzosa said Beneco is not gaining from any rate hikes.
The planned electric rate increase will be added to the power generation cost charged from Beneco members. At present, consumers from Baguio and Benguet are paying P2.47 for the generation charges as reflected in the Beneco unbundled rates.
Verzosa reported that almost 85 percent of Beneco's revenue is used to pay for the power supply. (JC)
