'Jueteng-free' tag doubtful: mayor By Rimaliza Opiña
NORTHERN Luzon may now be jueteng-free but concerned officials have to be aware that its operations might resume after the issue has died down, said Baguio City Mayor Braulio Yaranon.
In signing a manifesto attesting that jueteng operations no longer exist in Baguio City, the mayor said he had to make a notation on the document, which stated that operations have stopped as of the last week of April.
The mayor said the possibility of the illegal numbers game resuming its operations might not be far off. He presumed that because the First Family has been implicated, jueteng operators may have chosen to let matters "cool off" first.
With the stoppage of jueteng operations in the city, Yaranon reiterated that stopping the illegal numbers game lies primarily within the police force.
"The PNP can do something if they want to," Yaranon said as maintained that a "no deal or compromise" will be made to allow jueteng managers and financiers to operate here."
The mayor, on several occasions, issued memoranda to the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), under Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, ordering for a "sweep" of jueteng operations in the city.
Last March, Yaranon ordered Nerez to intensify the BCPO's operations to deter the resurgence of jueteng.
Information then reaching the City Hall said guerilla draws were being done at the Europa Condominium compound, along Marcos Highway, and at the satellite market of Engineers Hill.
"It is common knowledge that jueteng operations will not thrive in any locality unless there is collusion between the police and local officials with jueteng operators," Yaranon earlier told Nerez.
