City engineer's office to be asked to remove mosaic tiles By Rimaliza Opiña
BAGUIO City Mayor Braulio Yaranon is set to ask the City Engineer's Office (CEO) to chip off the artworks cemented on some portions of Session Road.
This developed after the Department of Public Works and Highways Baguio City District Engineering Office (DPWH-BCDEO) called for its removal because of the danger it could pose to pedestrians, and not necessarily following the death of a pedestrian.
Yaranon however is not keen on appropriating the P1.5 million request of the BCDEO for the repair of the sidewalks, saying the dilapidated portions of Session Road sidewalks might just be covered with sand to level off the surface where the artworks were installed.
The mayor added that he already told Baguio Panagbenga Flower Festival Association Inc. (BPFFAI) chairperson Nelia Cid to make the necessary communication to the people involved in its installation and make the necessary arrangements.
The Session Road mosaic was installed by a group of artists as part of the beautification of the city's main road and as part of the Panagbenga's celebration last February.
But recently, the family of an 81-year old lady who slipped on a portion of the road, which was then being chipped off in preparation for the installation of broken tiles for the mosaic, said they intended to sue the city government for alleged negligence in ensuring the safety of its residents.
Lourdes Cortes died last June 10, after staying bedridden for four months since February. As a result of her slipping on the pavement, she reportedly incurred a fracture on her hip. Her daughter Edna told Sun.Star that she also suffered from an injury after she bumped her head, also as a result of the slip.
It was the fracture that reportedly made the old lady stay bedridden for months.
Sun.Star, meanwhile, tried but failed to get the comment of renowned artist Eric de Guia, events coordinator of the 2005 Panagbenga, and Baguio Arts Guild president Sonny Balanga.
Both are expected to come up with their respective formal statements anytime Saturday.
