Trancoville, Aurora Hill jeepneys hit for gridlock
By Rimaliza Opiña

TRANCOVILLE and Aurora Hill jeepney drivers were hit for lack of discipline in the loading and unloading of their passengers and were blamed also for the clogging of the two major arteries of Baguio City, namely, Harrison Road and Magsaysay Avenue.

The Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of Baguio, Benguet and La Union (Fejodabblu) said Trancoville and Aurora Hill drivers load and unload passengers even at the middle of the street, contributing greatly to the clogging of traffic.

In a recent public hearing, individual jeepney drivers appealed to concerned city officials to look for a space to serve as permanent passenger loading area for Trancoville and Aurora Hill jeepneys.

Locating loading areas for "express" jeepneys is also one of the options being eyed by the city's Traffic and Transportation Management Committee (TTMC) as a way of unclogging the central business district (CBD).

The TTMC is also looking into the possibility of limiting the entry of jeepneys whose franchises do not include entry within Baguio, such as jeepneys coming from Asin, Tuba, Taloy, Liteng, Ucab, Camp 4, Camp 6 and Ambuklao.

The Baguio City Police Office-Traffic Management Branch (BCPO-TMB) and the Traffic Management Group (TMG)-Cordilleras also earlier suggested ways to lessen traffic volume, especially within the CBD.

The TMB, through Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, BCPO director, suggested the adoption of the odd-even scheme while Superintendent Robert Ganzon, chief of the TMG-Cordilleras, pushed for the use of the window traffic system.

The suggestions, together with the proposals of Councilor Perlita Chan-Rondez and Galo Weygan, shall be deliberated by the City Council.

Rondez, in a proposed amendatory ordinance, sought the exemption of private vehicles from the number coding ordinance while Weygan is seeking the imposition of a double number coding scheme during weekends.

The double number coding proposal calls for the banning of vehicles with plate numbers ending 1-5 on Saturdays and 6-0 on Sundays.
