Cepmo told to clean sewers, intensify trash collection
By Ernie N. Olson Jr.

BAGUIO City Mayor Braulio Yaranon has directed City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo) officer-in-charge Josephine Chan to clean the sewer system in the city's central business district (CBD) and see to it that no garbage is left uncollected on the streets.

He also instructed Chan to submit a report about the repair and refurbishing of garbage receptacles within the CBD as well as the purchase of new trash bins for the segregation of garbage into recyclable, non-recyclable and biodegradable waste.

In the two memoranda issued to Chan last week, Yaranon told her to "cause the necessary flushing and use of chemical deodorants to dampen the sewer effluent smell in the CBD (and) to see to it that no garbage is left uncollected on city streets. "This is a reiteration of our earlier request on the matter."

"You are (also) directed to submit a report as soon as possible, with recommendations on the matter of garbage receptacles for the city, particularly (for the) repair (and) refurbishing of those that have been taken out of commission, (and the) acquisition of new receptacles suitable for waste segregation into recyclable, non-recyclable and biodegradable (materials)," he added.

The City Government started it's "no segregation, no collection" policy last May 18 and not on April 18 as originally scheduled, upon the request of barangay officials to give them more time to inform their constituents on the segregation of waste materials.

The policy is in line with the Solid Waste Management Act, which was passed by Congress several years ago, and which urges local government units to practice waste segregation in their respective areas.

Despite efforts of the City Government to educate residents on the need to segregate their garbage separately, only a small percentage of city barangays have actually done this. This resulted in the non-collection of garbage in some areas of the city until recently.
