Happy Hallow residents lead in environment conservation
THE BAGUIO City Water District's failure to supply water to Happy Hallow barangay prompted its officials to intensify tree-planting activities to maintain the existing springs.
Through the assistance of Good Roots Project of Caltex Philippines and the Green Earth Legacy Foundation, Barangay Chairman Joseph Sacley said the barangay is now the beneficiary of nurseries for watershed enhancement, agricultural livelihood projects such as vegetable and fruit propagation and bamboo production.
Sacley said residents in the barangay are bent on preserving their environment, stressing that Happy Hallow is one of the few remaining barangays in the city with remaining forest reserves.
Also part of their environmental preservation, Sacley said the barangay has consistently guarded the area from possible entry of illegal settlers who might resort to logging to clear areas and put-up their shanties.
Close to 3,000 residents depend on springs found in several areas of the barangay. He said spring water also serve as natural irrigation to trees the residents and members of the Good Roots project planted last year.
Meanwhile, Sacley said the project would further be intensified through commercial production and development of educational programs on productive gardening, re-greening of public lands and establishment of individual household nurseries. (RO)
