Baguio hospital offers hip, knee operations
By Jane Cadalig

INDIVIDUALS suffering from hip and knee disorders need not go to Metro Manila or abroad for replacement, as surgeons specializing in these kind of operations are already locally available.

Dr. Antonio Tanchuling, Philippine Hip and Knee Society president, said orthopedic surgeons in the country are at par with surgeons abroad.

"Filipino surgeons have the expertise to conduct hip and knee operations. We could be at par, if not better, than those practicing in the US.

Tanchuling said most of the practicing orthopedic doctors in the Philippines have had their trainings abroad.

He added the country has enough surgeons to attend to the increasing number of hip and knee cases, an ailment that is usually suffered by the elderly.

Tanchuling said around 1,000 hip and knee cases are being reported yearly.

"The increasing number of these cases is due to the increasing population of elders in the country," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dennis Pagao, an orthopedics specialist of the Baguio General Hospital (BGH), said the health institution is admitting an average of two to three cases of patients with problems on either their hips or knees monthly.

A minimal admission at that, Pagao said it should be known to the locals that one of the health facilities in the region has the expertise of conducting such kinds of major operations.

In a bid to improve the field of orthopedics, the Philippine Hip and Knee Society adopted a dissemination program to acquaint surgeons on the latest trends and techniques of the said practice.

As such, the group, in coordination with the Philippine Orthopedic Association-Northern Luzon, conducted a surgical workshop at BGH.

"We started this program last year to update surgeons on the latest techniques and methods or management of these kinds of ailments," Tanchuling said.
