Opposition not surprised by counter-recall moves By Rimaliza Opiña
BAGUIO City Councilor Elmer Datuin did not consider Mayor Braulio Yaranon's announcement of a counter-recall surprising, saying that he, other members of the Council, as well as the ruling opposition party Timpuyog Ti Baguio even expected such move.
This developed after Yaranon said over the weekend that his supporters are planning a counter-recall among "unworthy" members of the City's legislative branch.
Datuin said Monday that they (other Councilors) already suspected that should there be any move for a counter-recall, the mayor would be the one behind it.
But similar to comments of the mayor regarding the recall, the alderman said the mayor or his supporters also have the right to call for such action since it is provided for by law.
But the councilor said he is not one of the "unworthy ones" alluded to by the mayor when he said that some members of the Council also have to be recalled.
Datuin is Yaranon's most vocal critic.
A three-term councilor, Datuin said he has done his duties as councilor and in accordance with the law.
Yaranon earlier shrugged off moves for his recall, stressing the process would take a long while, as the petition entails "the painful process of each signature being verified" in his presence as well the party or representative seeking the recall.
