Baguio artists in limelight Saturday

EVEN if some of the city councilors started what Kidlat Tahimik termed as "artist bashing", the Philippine art scene is giving due notice to the contributions of the Baguio artists.

The Philippine Art Awards has decided to make the city the collection area for Northern Luzon starting August 20.

"We are doing this because of the twin victories of the Baguio artists during last year's Asean Arts Awards," said Elmer Mesina, information officer of Philip Morris International Philippines, which is underwriting both national art awards.

Leonard Aguinaldo won the grand prize during the Asean Art Awards held in Bangkok, Thailand. His piece entitled "God Is On Our Side" bested other entries from the Southeast Asian region.

Kawayan Thor de Guia, the 25 year-old son of Kidlat, won the other special prize, the Juror's Country Prize, for his word "Mystique of the Urban Mistake."

"We see Baguio as the emerging center for arts in the country," said Mesina.

The opening of the National Arts Awards for Northern Luzon will be held Saturday at the Baguio Cordillera Museum with PMI country president Chris Nelson as special guest. All two-dimensional art works in Northern Luzon would be collected at the museum, Mesina said.

The Philippine Arts Awards, held every two years, will have a grand prize of P300,000 while the four finalists would get P150,000.

The five finalists would be the country's representatives to next year's Asean Arts Awards, which is also sponsored by Philip Morris.

All Filipinos who are 18 years old and above can join the most prestigious art award in the country. The theme is open to the artists as long as their piece has not been entered in other competition.
