City looks at options on Irisan conversion By Rimaliza Opina
A TEAM tasked to oversee the conversion of the Irisan dumpsite into a controlled dump facility continues to explore technologies to be utilized once the existing site is abandoned.
While Mayor Braulio Yaranon is eyeing for the waste-to-energy technology, Engineer Nazita Bañez, head of the technical working committee (TWC), said the team does not limit its options to the suggestion of the mayor, even as she stressed that the dumpsite could still be utilized for two years more if segregation in the barangays were fully implemented.
Bañez said that since the City started implementing its no segregation, no collection policy, the City posted only a 65 percent compliance level, which is 35 percent less than the projected 80 percent compliance.
Earlier, Bañez said the TWC is not keen on pursuing the proposed waste-to-energy technology, adding that the move is not practical as the amount of methane gas produced by the heap garbage at the present dumpsite might not be enough to produce energy.
The city generates around 270 to 300 tons of garbage daily.
