CJH launches 12th art tilt
AS PART of its continuing commitment to youth development in the field of culture and the arts, Camp John Hay Development Corporation (CJHDevCo) has launched the 12th staging of the record-setting Camp John Hay annual arts contest.
Like in previous years, the contest shall be open to aspiring artists aged 7 to 21 years old comprising three categories. Cash prizes and trophies await the winners, together with the distinction of being among the best in the field.
This year's contest, however, is slightly veering away from mostly environmental themes by adopting a more political yet socially relevant topic.
Lawyer Ma. Georgina Alvarez, CJHDevCo senior vice president for legal and corporate services, said this might be attributed to the present political climate in the country.
"Art is more meaningful if it mirrors the prevailing signs of the times," she said. This year's theme, "Eh Kasi, Pinoy!" aims to challenge the youth of today to identify characteristics, traits, values, attitudes, occasions, events, or personalities that would encapsulate their concept of the unique Filipino identity.
This identity should distinctly set the Filipino apart from other races around the world. "At the end of the contest, the artworks themselves would be able to reflect the present perception of the youth about what the real Filipino identity is all about," Alvarez added.
Aspiring young artists may register beginning Tuesday, September 20 at the John Hay Management Corporation (JHMC) or CJHDevCo offices. Registration forms shall also be distributed to the various city schools and universities.
Like in previous years, trophies and cash prizes await the winners, while certificates will be given to all participants.
For Category A (children aged 7-11) and Category B (12 to 16 years old), a cash prize of P7,500 await the first prize winners, P5,000 for the second prize, and P2,500 for the third prize. Two honorable mentions in each category will receive P1,500 each.
For Category C (aged 17 to 21 years old), the first prize is P10,000, while the second prize is P7,500. The third prize winner will receive P5,000, while two honorable mentions will get P2,500 each.
