Beauty titlist opposes sale of Imelda's jewels
By Jane Cadalig

INTERNATIONALLY-acclaimed model and actress Melanie Marquez is not amenable to the planned sale of the jewelries of former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

Marquez, in a press conference at City Travel Hotel Saturday, believed the set of Marcos jewelries to be auctioned by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) this November indeed belonged to the former First Lady.

"No one, (not even) the PCGG, have the right to take away the jewelries from the Marcoses. Those set of jewelries are her personal properties," Marquez said, calling Mrs. Marcos as "madame."

Marquez was referring to a set of emerald jewelries that was reportedly given by a Moroccan King as a token of gratitude to Mrs. Marcos. This set is believed to be one of those that are subject for auction.

She narrated that the set of emerald necklace, bracelet and earrings were given because the King was delighted by the performance of a cultural group, led by the former First Lady.

The former beauty queen further said she would be willing to testify in court that the controversial jewelries are personal properties of the Marcoses.

"She worked very hard in promoting this country and whatever she bought at that time (Marcos Regime) did not come from the wealth of this country," Marquez added.
