Baguio City to pursue Mine View satellite market

PROSPECTS brighten up for the Baguio City Government's plan to construct a satellite market at Mines View Park.

Mayor Braulio Yaranon said there were findings that the proposed site on which the satellite market will be built, is not covered by the Forbes Park reservation or the Mines View Park reservation.

The mayor said this could signal the implementation of the long-delayed project, which was identified as a priority program of the City.

The facilitate this, Yaranon asked the City Council to amend Ordinance 17-2003, which appropriates the funding for the identified priority projects, including the P19 million for the first phase of the satellite market.

In the ordinance, a condition was provided such that the project's implementation would be subject to the approval of a request to the President to exclude the site from reservations.

"It is requested that section 2 of the ordinance requiring the release or segregation of the site be cancelled so that the project may be re-estimated and subjected to re-bidding," the mayor said.

The satellite market project was first identified as a priority by former Mayor Bernardo Vergara, who cited its overall socio-economic impact, revenue-generating potential and importance to the tourism and local governance development efforts of the City.

Yaranon agreed that the project is crucial to addressing the uncontrolled proliferation of vendors at the area, which is one of the city's popular tourist destinations. (Aileen Refuerzo)
