By Ernie N. Olson Jr.

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Cordillera has reported a total of 95 women and 439 children who were sexually abused last year.

The number was aside from another 68 women and 232 children who went through the same ordeal in 2003.

Alvin Tanicala, public information officer of the DSWD in the Cordillera region, said the number did not include victims whose cases were not reported for one reason or another.

Tanicala said their records revealed that in 2004, 476 women were physically abused or maltreated, 95 were sexually abused, three were forced into prostitution, 74 were illegally recruited, one was detained against her will and three were "unable to validate (what type of) abuse" they went through.

In 2003, 400 women were physically abused or maltreated, 68 were sexually abused, 51 were illegally recruited, one was detained against her will and another four were also unable to validate the abuse they went through.

"Out of the 330,890 women in the region, 667 or 0.20 percent in 2003 and 865 or 0.26 percent in 2004, respectively, were reported victims of abuse and human trafficking," said Tanicala.

On reported violence against children, 439 were sexually abused, 232 were neglected or abandoned, 138 were physically abused or maltreated, 22 were victims of child labor, seven were sexually exploited, 10 were victims of armed conflict or child trafficking and 20 were unable to validate their abuse last year.

The same records show that in 2003, another 232 children were sexually abused, 103 were neglected or abandoned, 73 were physically abused or maltreated, one was a victim of child labor, 13 were sexually exploited, five were victims of armed conflict or child trafficking and 22 were unable to validate their abuse.

"Out of the 601,557 children in the region, an average of 0.13 percent was victims of human trafficking and abuse. For the last two years, (those) sexually abused reported the highest percentage," the DSWD reports added.
