PNP chief orders recall of traffic police plates

ONLY four commemorative vehicle license plates are authorized nationwide by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).

The plates do not include the ones issued by the PNP Traffic Management Group (TMG) that have been recalled.

Participants in the 125th meeting of the National Law Enforcement Coordinating Council (Nalecc), which coincided with the 23rd Nalecc anniversary at the Camp John Hay CAP Convention Center, said authorized plates are those issued for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games commemoration and those of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine, the Congregation of Sisters of Saint Paul and one undisclosed organization.

The commemorative plates were aside from "vanity plates" that they described as license plates having special numbers like 888 and 444 that are issued upon payment of amounts range from P15,000 to P20,000 per plate.

"Other commemorative plates, even those issued by the PNP-TMG, have all been ordered to be recalled, after it was noted that some criminal elements and other unscrupulous characters have been using them in their nefarious activities," said PNP Chief Arturo Lomibao during the forum.

Lomibao said although only four commemorative plates are authorized at the present time, the plates should not be installed directly over regular ones to cover them, but should be put in some other portion of the vehicle.

The matter on commemorative license plates was discussed after a woman-member of the Nalecc complained that her PNP-TMG plate was confiscated by agent of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and that she was subsequently fined P5,000. She said she bought the plate earlier for P3,000.

The PNP chief ordered the TMG to recall the commemorative license plates issued and reimburse the amounts paid even if the TMG had a "good cause" in issuing the items, like raising funds for student scholarships. (ENO)
