Alipio: The importance of a good start By Fr. Jose Alipio
1 Kings 3:4-13
SOLOMON must have realized that David had set a high benchmark for kings of ancient Israel. If he was to live up to his father's legacy, Solomon would have to get off to a good start, so he sought divine guidance.
Approaching God with an extravagant display of sacrifice, he asked God for the wisdom to govern his people. Solomon admitted that he was too young to know how to lead the mighty nation that his father had built. God was pleased that Solomon asked for an understanding of right and wrong rather than asking for long life, great wealth or military success.
So God promised to give Solomon the wisdom for which he asked, and the health, riches and glory for which he did not ask. Who could have wanted a better start in life than was granted to Solomon?
Getting a good start is important in any endeavor. The children who do best in school are the ones whose parents teach them basic skills from their earliest years. There is growing evidence that our Head Start programs can never make up the loss of those early years. The couples, who do best in marriage, are the ones who build their relationship on the foundation of friendship. Going into a marriage as friends is the surest way to remain in a marriage as lovers. The senior citizens who grow old graciously are the ones who have prepared themselves for retirement. They have gathered resources and cultivated interests that will sustain them when work is no longer the center of their lives. Life has a way of slipping by before you know it. Getting the jump on tomorrow can only happen today.
