Mayor seeks confirmation of water pollution study
By Jane Cadalig

THE Municipal Government of Buguias is asking for another analysis of water sources in one of its barangays to verify an earlier study that revealed majority of it are contaminated with harmful bacteria.

Mayor Thomas Palileng said the conduct of another research is needed to confirm the findings of the Saint Louis University on the quality of water in Barangay Loo, Buguias as per the samples submitted by the Benguet State University (BSU).

The BSU Research Division earlier disclosed that 19 out of the 20 water sources of Loo are infected with coliform bacteria, an organism found in fecal matters from animals and humans.

Of the 20 sampled water sources, two were found positive of coliform bacteria. Water sampling was done last August 10 to 11.

But Palileng is pushing for another study with the same water sources to be done during the dry months.

He said the negative result was inevitable because the study was conducted during the rainy season when the water was in a moving stage wherein polluted water in one area affected other areas.

"The research should be redone during the dry season so we could verify the results," he said.

He added that the Municipal Government does not consider the assessment a cause for alarm although he advised his constituents to be cautious, especially in putting up their water pumping stations.

"There is always that concern but we do not take it as an alarming one, especially since our local health unit reported there is not much cases of diseases associated with the contamination of water," he said.

The mayor said they are contemplating on establishing a water distribution facility in the town to be implemented as one project of the municipal employees.
