City, police asked to identify sites for Baguio night market
BAGIUO City Planning and Development Coordinating Officer Arturo Orig and city police chief Isagani Nerez were asked Wednesday to identify possible sites within the city's central business district (CBD) where a night market may be put up.
Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr., chairperson of the City Council committee on market, trade and commerce, said "the immediate submission of your (Orig and Superintendent Nerez) reports and recommendations will put in motion the spirit and intent of Resolution 244-04 and would ease the present predicament of the city in so far as peddling and vending in prohibited places are concerned."
"It is also our social responsibility to provide an alternative (area) for these peddlers and vendors, especially in these trying times, where the lesser fortunate in our society find it very difficult to make ends meet," he added.
In a proposed resolution, Yangot said the city market is now overcrowded due to the proliferation of peddlers and vendors. "The overcrowding of the city's public market results in the inconvenience of market goers and at times provides an avenue for criminal elements to conduct their operations."
He said while the City Government adheres to the strict implementation of its zoning laws and other related laws, it should also attend to the livelihood needs of its constituents, especially the less fortunate, who sell to earn a living.
The councilor added that the conduct of a flea market at any available space in the city on certain days of the week will be appropriate to help sidewalk vendors as well as other traders sell their products in a legitimate manner.
Yangot recommended that the proposed flea market be held at the open space at the Baguio Convention Center from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
He said the night market may also be constructed either at the Malcolm Square or in any other suitable area within the CBD. (EO)
