Mayor asks cops, village execs to watch chicken dung trade

LA TRINIDAD Mayor Nestor Fongwan has directed the town police and officials of Barangay Shilan to monitor the compliance of chicken dung dealers on the conditions set for the temporary sale of chicken waste in the area.

Fongwan lifted the ordinance banning the chicken dung trade pursuant to Municipal Council Resolution 194-2005, which authorized him to allow the trade in aid of legislation.

The legislative body said data and other concerns that will be gathered would be one of its bases in deciding whether or not to approve a proposed ordinance seeking the regulation of the sale of chicken waste in the town.

The Municipal Council also designated a private lot along the Halsema Highway to be the temporary site for the trade as part of the conditions set in allowing the activity.

Chicken dealers were also asked to load and unload the by-product at a distance of 15 meters from the highway to avoid traffic congestion that will be brought by their activities. Maintenance of sanitation and peace and order at the designated trading place were also emphasized.

The Municipal Government will also collect a regulatory fee of 50 centavos per sack of chicken dung to be deposited in a trust fund.

The mayor asked the police and the affected barangay to come up with a daily monitoring report as regards the dealers' compliance with the conditions.

Duration of the ban's temporary suspension was not specified but the Municipal Council said it would rescind Resolution 194 if one of the conditions set would be violated.

Barangay Shilan Chairman Mariano Caluza, meanwhile, said he would meet with his constituents to inform them of the development. He said the trade will not only generate revenues for the barangay and the Municipal Government but will also provide livelihood for the people living near the area. (JC)
