2 special awards up for grabs on media night
TWO special awards will be presented by the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) to Baguio media pioneers during the first BCBC Awards Night on December 11.
"The special awards are meant to honor our colleagues who pioneered media in the Cordillera region," said BCBC president Robert Tabay.
Although Tabay did not reveal the awardees, he said BCBC officers originally thought of granting a "Lifetime Achievement Award" to a pioneer for the awardee's contribution to the development of local media. He, however, said "local media would not be where it is today without the involvement of two vital people, so the present BCBC officers decided to give out two awards this year."
Aside from special awards, BCBC will also give special memorabilia to past presidents of the club. "The club could not have been this successful without the leadership of past presidents. The memorabilia are just simple gifts to recognize how much we appreciate all the help and support the past presidents gave the club," he said.
Meanwhile, nominations for the first BCBC media awards are still being accepted. Fifteen awards in three categories--print, radio and television--are up for grabs in the first-ever awards night for local media practitioners.
The print category has Reporter of the Year, Correspondent of the Year, Columnist of the Year, Photojournalist of the Year and Editorial Cartoonist of the Year. For radio, the awards are Anchorperson of the Year, News Reporter of the Year, Program Host of the Year, News Writer of the Year and Newscaster of the Year. For television, the awards are Anchorperson of the Year, News Reporter of the Year, Program Host of the Year, News Writer of the Year and Newscaster of the Year.
"Anyone can nominate as many as they want. The only people who cannot nominate are the current officers of the club," Tabay said.
Nominations will be accepted until Monday. The only limitations are that the nominee must be a member of BCBC and not an editor-in-chief or executive editor or associate editor of any of the local publication neither should be a bureau chief of any of the national bureaus; or a station manager of any of the radio or television stations.
Nominations should be placed inside a brown envelop together with a photocopy or cutout of the published item (for print nominees), or a cassette or compact disc (CD) recording of the radio report or program (radio), or a video or CD recording of the television report or program; and a certification from the editor or station manager that the nominee's work was published or aired between Jan. 1 and Nov. 20, 2005.
"Nominations must be received by November 21 and these may be addressed to The Secretariat, BCBC Media Awards, 3rd floor, Insular Life Building, Baguio City," Tabay said.
A distinguished panel of judges will decide the initial awardees.
"I hope we will support this endeavor, as it will prove that local media practitioners are a cut above, if not at par with, their national counterparts," Tabay said.
