Amateur radio aficionados to meet in Baguio
SOME 300 amateur radio enthusiasts from around the country and abroad are expected to attend the 73rd Philippine Amateur Radio Association (Para) Anniversary and Hamvention scheduled at the Green Valley Country Club in Baguio City from November 25 to November 27 this year.
Proponents said "hamvention" is the term they use for a gathering or convention. Likewise, "ham" refers to an amateur radio enthusiast, while "eyeball" is the term for meeting another amateur radio enthusiast.
Jimmy Kho, overall program chairman of Hamvention, said there are about 20 foreign participants in the event.
As of November 23, a total of 118 participants have registered on-line at www.geocities.com/hamvention_73, but Kho said the figure could double up in time of the event as there will be a lot of walk-in registrants.
He said "the activity is all about Filipino amateur radio enthusiasts working together as a team for the continuous improvement of the hobby. It is also a grand "eyeball" for all Para districts and hams from abroad."
Officials of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), local officials of Baguio, Para directors and officials are also expected to join the occasion.
Different amateur radio clubs such as DX2TI (Texas Instruments), DX2B (Barons), DX2Triac and DX2AAA organized the event. (NP)
