Southwoods, Aguinaldo ready to defend titles

DEFENDING champions Manila Southwoods and Aguinaldo prepare to defend their respective crowns when the Filipino-American (Fil-Am) Seniors Invitational Golf Tournament fires off Saturday at the Camp John Hay (CJH) and Baguio Country Club (BCC) courses in the city.

Members of the defending Filipino Championship Southwoods are on natural high as they gear up for the big games in the second year of the Fil-Am's 56-year-old and above division.

"We are on track," said Ben Borja after testing the par-69 John Hay course along with teammates Butch Brodett, Ken Onda, Florene delos Santos and Eugene Arriesgado.

"A couple of more practice rounds and we are ready," added Borja who with Onda, delos Santos, Jun Belicina and Ed Cataquis won the inaugural seniors last year.

On the other hand, defending American Championship titlist Camp Aguinaldo was also at the Camp John Hay course Wednesday to test the Jack Nicklaus-redesigned course in preparation for the big day starting Saturday for the event backed by Smart Telecommunications Inc., Wilson Sports, Eva Air and Club Car.

Southwoods and Aguinaldo are two of the 36 teams seeing action in the event backed by Citibank, San Miguel Corporation, Travel Club, Ottica Eyewear, IPI, Ayala Land, Orchard le Tigre, U-Bix, Raymundo's Trophies and Sculptures and Swing Magazine.

The Fil-Am, which drew a record of 1,060 players this year from six countries from the Pacific rim and listed in the Guinness Book of World Record, gets official today when officials of the event fire the ceremonial tee.

Firing the tee are BCC president Federico Agcaoli, CJH chairman Robert Sobrepena, Baguio City Representative Mauricio Domogan, Mayor Braulio Yaranon and tournament co-chair Anthony de Leon of BCC and Bong Vilchez of CJH.

BCC will host the welcome cocktails starting at 6 p.m. with Yaranon who will honor the lucky foreign and "balikbayan" chosen from the participants namely the Fil-Hawaiian Golf Club and Pines Golf Club of Chicago.

This year's Fil-Am will give away plane tickets during the awards nights and golf carts as well as Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) chips for the hole-in-one makers. The designated holes are the 15th and the 18th at the CJH and one and 10th at the BCC. (PML)
