Lang-ay festival tops Wow Cordi street parade

MOUNTAIN Province's Lang-ay festival bagged most of the awards in the street dancing parade during the closing ceremonies of the Wow Philippines Gran Cordillera Festival Tuesday.

Coming all the way from several towns of the province, the Lang-ay festival street dancing parade was judged as the best from the more than 15 entries.

Clad in their native costumes, the group was also judged as the most colorful group. The contingent went home with P60,000 for winning the two categories.

Established only last April as an added tourist come-on of Mountain Province, Tourism Regional Director Purificacion Molintas said the Mountain Province contingent would be featured along with other festivals in the region in the Wow Hilaga entertainment village during the re-opening of the expo Filipino in Clark, Pampanga this month.

Literally meaning a "get together," the Lang-ay festival is a showcase of common tribal and cultural practices in the Cordilleras such as on war, courtship, marriage and merrymaking.

Now serving as a preparatory event to upcoming festivals in the region, Molintas said next year's Wow Philippines Gran Cordillera Festival would be hosted by Mountain Province and by Kalinga in 2007.

Other participants in the Gran Cordillera Festival are private organizations such as Baguio Association of Hotels and Inns, Baguio Association of Restaurants, National Association of Independent Travel Agencies, Philippine Chamber of Commerce, schools offering Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management course, Baguio elementary and high schools and contingents from the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao, Abra, Apayao and Kalinga.
