Military rejects erection of schools inside reservation
THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) disallows the use of a portion of the Fort del Pilar military reservation for the construction of public school buildings.
The Municipal Government of Itogon, Benguet earlier asked the AFP to segregate at least 3,000 square meters of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) property for the construction of elementary and public high schools as requested by residents of Barangay Virac.
But AFP Acting Adjutant General Elvira Nunez said the requested portion was already set aside for the expansion program of the PMA.
Nunez, in behalf of AFP Chief Generoso Senga, wrote the Provincial Board (PB) of Benguet which endorsed Itogon's appeal.
"PMA will need the land in the next five years for its modernization and facilities expansion program. All available lands (inside the reservation) are being studied and considered for maximum utilization," the letter stated.
It further said the AFP already informed the heads of the schools within the reservation that their occupied properties would be utilized by PMA in the future.
The barangay council of Virac, through a resolution, has asked President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Commander-in-Chief of the AFP, to cause the segregation of a part of the military reservation for educational purposes.
Residents here are longing for a nearer school site for their children, who they claimed, have to walk for at least three kilometers to reach Fort del Pilar public elementary and high schools, the nearest educational institution from their area.
The school buildings are within the jurisdiction of Baguio City.
The requested school site is in sitio Kias, which falls under the military reservations covered by Proclamation 2405 issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos.
Virac residents said the construction of school buildings within the area, which would be named after former President Diosdado Macapagal, will provide more conducive learning facilities to the children since the existing institutions are overcrowded if not too far from their residents. (JC)
