Benguet pays tribute to 4 outstanding officials By Jane Cadalig
BAGUIO CITY -- Local officials and employees of Benguet who have been instrumental in promoting the development of the marginalized sector in the province will reap the fruits of their efforts Thursday.
La Trinidad Mayor Nestor Fongwan will lead the awardees in the 1st Provincial Gawad Parangal, a program organized by the province in coordination with the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, which is aimed at recognizing the contributions of local government units in the upliftment of social services in their respective areas.
Named as the outstanding vice mayor, councilor and barangay chairman are Mankayan Vice Mayor James Guanso Jr., Kibungan Councilor Susan Atayoc, who chairs the committee on social welfare, and Tinongdan, Itogon Barangay Chairman Norberto Pacio, respectively.
Social Welfare officer III Irene Lanuza of Tublay will be awarded as Benguet's outstanding municipal social worker.
Awardees were chosen on the basis of support they extended to social development programs, said Provincial Social Welfare Officer Juana Bannawe, who is one of the members of the committee formed by Governor Borromeo Melchor to evaluate those who were nominated for the search.
Melchor and Vice Governor Crescencio Pacalso compose the executive committee. Board Member Liso Agpas chairs the screening committee with Bannawe, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Benguet Provincial Director Myrna Monayao and Provincial Planning and Development officer Alex Balangcod as members.
Nominations were done per municipality and were screened at the provincial level.
All local government units (LGUs) were supportive of the social welfare and development services program, Bannawe said, but added they had to qualify the extent of assistance accorded by the local officials.
"The search for the outstanding local chief executives, legislators, punong barangays and social welfare officers would be our way of acknowledging these support and to motivate them more to continue these initiatives," Bannawe told reporters.
Awarding ceremonies for the province's outstanding officials and employee will be held at the Governor Ben Palispis Hall, Capitol building at 2 p.m.
