P2M farmers' fund released
TABUK, Kalinga -- Farmers here could be among the merriest this Yuletide season with the release of the hybrid rice program fund of the government.
Provincial Agriculturist Gerry Jose said the Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Cordillera region has released to the province P1 million for the rehabilitation of four communal irrigation systems (CIS) in Pinukpuk where the hybrid rice program is taking headway.
Another P1 million has arrived for the ground improvement of the ongoing hybrid rice seeds cold storage project and construction of multi-purpose drying pavement (MPDP), Jose said.
He said of the fund, P700,000 will go to the cold storage project while P300,000 will be appropriated for MPDPs.
The province is still expecting an additional P1 million for its hybrid rice program before the year ends. The amount is part of the mechanical dryer project fund converted to MPDP fund.
The DA approved the conversion of the allotment for the purchase of mechanical dryers as funds for the construction of MPDPs in Kalinga.
Earlier, farmers here passed a resolution to that effect, since the maintenance of mechanical dryers in the province is very costly.
The latest round of fund release is part of the government's effort to advance hybrid rice production in Kalinga, which is among the top producers of hybrid rice in the country today.
Jose also reported that there will be an assessment and evaluation among the hybrid rice producing municipalities of the province next year to further enhance the program.
