Farmers still have time to enhance crops: board member

LOCAL agricultural growers still have the time to improve their production to be more competitive in the international market.

This developed as Benguet Board Member John Kim said the recently concluded World Trade Organization (WTO) conference in Hong Kong has not yield any positive result that would give way to its implementation.

Kim said WTO-member countries failed to come up with a final agreement during the five-day convention. The board member represented the country's vegetable industry to the conference.

About 6,000 delegates from 49 countries, who signified membership to the WTO, attended the conference.

"There was no final agreement, only drafts of the issues and concerns raised by the members," Kim told reporters during the Benguet Forum.

The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Gatt) by the WTO would be implemented by January next year.

The board member said the failure of the convention is a welcome development for farmers, who would have the chance to further enhance the quality of their products to be able to compete with foreign commodities.

Local farmers are opposed to the implementation of the WTO on claims that entry of foreign crops will kill the country's agriculture industry. (JC)
