Dad leads campaign for bishop-led Panagbenga By Rimaliza Opiña
BAGUIO City Councilor Galo Weygan, a known ally of Mayor Braulio Yaranon, has initiated a signature campaign in support of the Panagbenga executive committee led by Bishop Carlito Cenzon of the Baguio-Benguet Vicariate.
The petition, circulated mostly among religious congregations, non-government organizations, women's groups, senior citizens groups, barangays, tourism and education sectors, already reportedly reached a "substantial number" of signatories. The actual number has yet to be made public.
"The mayor is trying to get support from the City Council but that will never come," Weygan said.
"The leaders of the city are divided due to political selfish interests and pride, which have brought the issue at a standstill the previous months up to this time," a portion of the petition stated.
It stressed that if the standoff continues, the issue on whether there would only be one Panagbenga next year would remain unanswered.
"Panagbenga is a community concern not of politicians but the people here and those abroad," the petition added.
Cenzon earlier asked the City Council to issue a moratorium on its resolution, which gave back the management of the city's crowd-drawing event to its founder, the Baguio Panagbenga Flower Festival Foundation Inc. (BFFFI), "until after the crisis is resolved." His plea was referred to the City Council ad hoc committee on Panagbenga.
But Councilor Daniel Fariñas, a member of the committee, said even a moratorium would not resolve the problem. He reiterated that Yaranon should give in and let the Panagbenga be managed by a more experienced group.
