Creation of group to determine merits of organic farming eyed By Jane Cadalig
THE creation of a group to conduct a study on concerns of farmers who are practicing organic farming in the province is being pursued by municipal council heads of committees on agriculture.
This is to determine the positive or negative consequences of this farming practice and to recommend how weaknesses could further be improved.
La Trinidad Councilor William Esteban said some farmers are receptive to the move to shift to organic agriculture but there are several concerns that need to be addressed.
The differences in climate and the type of soils in each Benguet towns should also be considered before farmers in particular areas are encouraged to embrace organic production.
"These individual differences should be considered because there are areas where agricultural production could thrive even without the use of commercial pesticides and there are places not susceptible to it," Esteban said.
He added the demand on organic products should also be studied to guide farmers on the volume of production.
Organic agricultural growers in La Trinidad are bent on converting the municipality to an area free from the use of pesticides and chemicals for food safety and for the environment's preservation.
