Mayor told to hold telecom firm's operations
LA TRINIDAD Mayor Nestor Fongwan is being asked to suspend the operation of one of the country's giant communication service providers until such time the company submits the documents being required by the Municipal Government.
Town officials said the construction of a cell site by the Smart Telecommunications Company at sitio Tayawan in Barangay Tawang has not been issued the necessary municipal permits.
The Municipal Council committee on public utilities asked Fongwan to issue a cease and desist order against the operation of Smart facilities.
This stemmed from an opposition from residents of sitio Tayawan on the construction of the cell site in their area.
Tawang councilwoman Norma Mendoza, in a letter to the Municipal Council, said the putting up of the facility did not undergo consultations among affected residents. It was also not issued a barangay clearance, she added.
One of the company's representatives, who was invited by the Municipal Council to one of its sessions, said their operation is covered by permits from the Municipal Government. He assured the Municipal Council that the company will submit all the documents.
But the councilors said the telecommunication firm did not fulfill its promise. "This action of disobedience and non-compliance on the part of Smart shows deliberate defiance to the existing rules of the Municipal Government," they said.
The city lawmakers said the suspension will be lifted once the company submits 1all the required documents. (JC)
