Mayor: Baguio is 'open' to Muslims, vendors By Rimaliza Opiña
BAGUIO City is a neutral zone for anyone who chooses to stay here whether for leisure, education or permanent residence.
Reacting over reports of discrimination on Muslims in some parts of the country, Mayor Braulio Yaranon assured that here, anyone regardless of profession, status and religious affiliation are welcome to stay here and could avail of the services of the City Government.
Around 5,000 to 7,000 Muslims stay in Baguio where most are involved in the retail trade.
Meanwhile, Yaranon announced that a dialogue with vendors at the night market would be scheduled in the coming days, following the lapse of the experiment period of the night market at Harrison Road.
The mayor said that among the issues that would be resolved are complaints from those who participated at the Harrison night market of violations by fellow vendors who insists on peddling at Session Road, despite a directive that peddling should be limited at the site identified by the city government.
The parameters on the conduct of a night market such as the types of items to sell and time limit would also be discussed.
