Agency under fire for 'breach' of burial, education plans

THE regional office of the Government Service Insurance Service (GSIS) could not offer any explanation on the plan holders' complaints on the violations of the terms of contracts for its memorial service (Genesis Plus) and educational (Edu-Child) plans.

A source from GSIS in the Cordillera region said the office has not received any advisory from the agency's central office on the issues, hence could not offer explanations to the plan holders here.

The source also said even GSIS-CAR employees who availed of the plans are in quandary. They do not know the real situation because the central office has not explained why the terms and conditions in the memorial service and educational plans are not being followed when needed.

GSIS tied up with Paz Memorial Services, Inc. and Prudential Life Plans to be its marketing arm for the memorial services and educational plans, respectively.

A female employee of the City Public Information Office (PIO) said she could not make use of the educational plan for her son even if said plan was fully paid.

"What we know is that as of this time, Edu-Child plan holders will have to shoulder the tuition of their beneficiaries then GSIS will reimburse it later on," said Virna Falsis of Prudential Life Plans.

Falsis said the contract of the insurance service agency with Prudential Life Plans for the nationwide marketing of the educational plan ended in 1998 but the marketing share of the pre-need company has not been fully paid yet.

Several plan holders of the memorial service package are also complaining why the benefits promised in the terms and conditions of the plan are not being followed.

Assistant City Accountant Almaya Adawe said she was advised by GSIS-CAR to continue deducting contributions from the salaries of plan holders because stopping it means termination of the policy.

She said GSIS should come up with advisories in the media so that the people will be informed of the real situation, as it is their right to be informed.
