Rotary club offers scholarship program
THE Rotary Club of Baguio South (RCBS) will open its scholarship program for underprivileged but intellectually ably high school graduates in the city next school year.
RCBS president Mario Alzona Jr. said the club board of directors, after two years of deliberations, has finally approved the guidelines for sponsoring the college education of the lucky grantees.
The guidelines were the result of careful studies conducted by the club's new generation youth committee chaired by Nicanor Laya.
"The scholarship program will be our club's gift to underprivileged youth who have the intellectual capacity to pursue further their education in the college level to enable them to contribute to the socio-economic development of our country as well as to promote peace and support the government programs in nation-building and improving the standard of living of the 30 percent Filipinos living under the poverty level," Alzona said.
As per the guidelines, the program will start with two grantees who have the following qualifications: must be a student of a barangay high school within the city; must be among the top ten honor roll of the graduating class in high school; must be in good health and of good moral character; must be a natural born citizen or resident of the city for at least four years; must belong to the poorest of the poor family as proven by endorsements from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), barangay or others; and must not be a grantee of any other scholarship programs.
Under the program, the club will shoulder the full tuition and miscellaneous fees and will give a monthly stipend of P500 for the chosen grantees.
The grantees will get to choose any four or five-year college course of his/her interest subject to the approval of the board and must maintain a general average rating of 85 percent with no grade lower than 80 percent in any subject. The scholars must maintain a maximum load during the semester and must not take summer classes. Shifting to other courses will not be allowed.
A committee, whose members will coordinate with the concerned high school in the selection process, will screen the applicants. Prospective scholars may inquire at the Alpa-PCM Office at the Puso ng Baguio building along Session Road. (AR)
