Afternoon rains benefit farmers By Jane Cadalig
THE PHILIPPINE Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Sunday said the afternoon downpours being experienced in Baguio City lately are normal occurrences.
Pagasa weather observer Wilson Lucando said the rains are caused by the cold front that is actively prevailing in the eastern portion of the country.
"The rains in the afternoon are brought about by the winds coming from the part of the country that is currently rainy, but this will not lead to a typhoon," he said.
The weather observer said the afternoon rains will continue unless the cold front that is affecting the region weakens.
Farmers in Benguet are benefiting from this prevailing weather condition.
Kibungan Mayor Murphy Paayas said the rains, though seeming to be an early precedent of the rainy season, which usually starts in June, is advantageous to farmers in this town, who were saved from the damages that may be caused by frost.
Aside from the fact that the temperature did not drop, which could cause frosts to develop and damage agricultural crops, Paayas said the rains have helped in preventing this phenomenon.
Frost is a freezing weather condition usually experienced by the highland towns of Benguet, which ruins agricultural plantations in the province.
Last year, the estimated damage caused by this natural calamity to the province's agriculture sector amounted to more than P25 million.
