Traders at SM shopping mall rue illegal vending By Rimaliza Opiña
A GROUP of businessmen has said efforts to rid Baguio City of illegal vendors remain inutile because street hawking continues to be rampant.
While commending the recent move of the City Government to relocate night vendors from Session Road to Harrison Road, 171 owners of business establishments at SM Baguio complained that illegal vendors selling fake products continues to abound.
"The order to relocate these vendors to another venue is a praiseworthy act but it is now evident that the order is blatantly violated and legitimate authority is being defied. Nocturnal vendors selling pirated compact discs (CDs) and video compact discs (VCDs), fake silver jewelries, cheap imitation of original brand wares and other regulated commodities are again all over Upper Session Road and not a single soul from among the legitimate agencies is lifting a finger to enforce the mandate," the businessmen said.
In a petition addressed to Mayor Braulio Yaranon, the Public Safety and Order Division (POSD), the City Council and the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), the traders appealed for consistency "and demonstrate political will" in putting a stop to illegal vending.
"This is but a small problem but if it can't be resolved decisively, then doubt is cast on the administrative capability and credibility of the city's leadership in addressing bigger problems," they added.
SM acting mall manager Jeff Chiu said the petition is a reiteration of the businessmen's earlier appeal to concerned city officials late last year.
Chiu hoped that the City Government would take action on their appeal and that appropriate measures would be implemented to ensure that the campaign on illegal vending would be a success.
